This collection is years of blood, sweat, and tears from my wallet. I have been working on it since Playmates introduced their Star Trek line in 1992.

The shelves are a work in progress.

Sideshow Collectibles 1/6 Scale R2-D2 Review

Star Wars: 1/6 Scale R2-D2
Sideshow Collectibles
Retail: $149.99 @ BigBadToyStore.com

The Star Wars saga is full of unique and interesting characters, but my favorites are the droids. Most of all, I LOVE the astromechs.

R2-D2 has the distinction of being one of the main cast. He is spunky and funny ... despite us not being able to understand one single beep or chirp coming from his processor.

I was super excited to find Sideshow Collectibles had added him to their line-up!

He comes in a nicely done book-style window box that latches via a well-hid magnet. The artwork on the front, back, and sides shows many angles of the small droid and him with some of his accessories. When you open the cover, you find R2 nicely displayed with all of the accessories prominently visible.

The figure is absolutely beautiful! Little details make the difference here.

His dome rotates freely in both directions. There is no worry about wires because all of the electronics are stashed inside the dome. He has four panels at the top of his dome that are accessed by either pushing down until they pop up, by pushing down and sliding to the side, or by using the magnetic light saber. Two of the panels hide an extending life scanner and extending periscope. The third panel hides Skywalker's light saber hilt (see video below). The fourth panel allows you to attach the articulated drink serving arm. The dome also includes three rotating projectors.

The body allows for you to use the light saber magnet to open both of the blue control arms and four panels on the front of his chassis. Two of the panels reveal application arms to which you can attach his grasping arm and power charge arm. A third panel allows you to connect his computer terminal access arm.  At the bottom, you can push up on and release his center terrain tread leg.

He includes 20 points of articulation:
  • Freely rotating dome head
  • Hinge joints x2 at the upper terrain tread legs
  • Hinge joints x3 at the lower terrain tread legs
  • Pop-out third terrain tread leg
  • Opening compartments x8
  • Opening utility arms x2
  • Sliding application arms x2
  • Rotating projectors x3

He comes with a ton of accessories:
  • Extending life scanner (non-removable)
  • Extending periscope (non-removable)
  • Skywalker's light saber hilt with magnet tip
  • Articulated drink serving arm
  • Multi-Tiered serving tray
  • Drinking glasses x7
  • Ben Kenobi's table
  • Princess Leia hologram
  • Computer terminal arm
  • Grasping arm
  • Power charge arm
  • Restraining bolt

Ben Kenobi's table is pretty sweet. You can remove a plug from its center (using the magnetic light saber) and replace it with the Princess Leia hologram. With the push of a button, the hologram lights up a brilliant blue.

The restraining bolt attaches to R2's front via magnets.

The articulated drink serving arm attaches to the top of the dome and the serving try slips over the top of his outer terrain tread legs.

The lights ... oh my god the lights! They are amazing and are controlled by touching the blue panel on the right side of R2's dome.

The light saber storage is tricky and frustrating. It's difficult to push/slide the compartment and put the light saber in the compartment or allow it to pop out.

My only complaints about this figure are the difficult light saber storage compartment and the fact that the instructions for removing the dome and activating the lights are fairly non-existent.

The Breakdown:
  • Playability - 5 out of 5.  There is so much going on here, I don't know where to start. He is a collectible, but there is so much potential!
  • Collectibility - 5 out of 5. The packaging is highly displayable. It is nicely done and the book-style window box will make for excellent displaying.
  • Paint Applications - 5 out of 5. No complaints. In fact, there are little details, like weathering on his radar eye, that make it special.
  • Standability - 5 out of 5. He stands nicely on two or three legs.
  • Articulation - 5 out of 5. Again, a lot going on. I really like the free rotation of his dome and all of the compartments are fun.
  • Accessories - 5 out of 5. Whew! Where do I begin?
  • Affordability - 5 out of 5. At $149.99, he is a bit steep, but it's so worth it for a high-end collectible like this one.

Overall impression: A solid 5 out of 5.

He is a must-have in so many ways!
